I’m in the SF Bay Area and relocate to Annapolis Q3 or 4 of this year. I have a 2019 Superformance Slabside Mk II purchased new from Hillbank Irvine in Sept. Blueprint 347, Holley EFI, T5 trans. Grigio Silverstone, tan leather. Below pics on PCH near Big Sur couple weeks ago.

I’m looking for member guidance on how to register in MD. Car has the CA SB100 process approval; ie smog exempt in CA for life. CA Title “Make” is “SPCNS” (no Model Year) - ie nothing like ”63 Shelby Cobra” on the title. (I’d read somewhere if the title cites the make/year of the car the replica represents, it might be treated as a historic - less painful route? .... anyway, not the case here).

I’m looking at the MVA website, but would appreciate guidance from any 538B3C1F-D678-4852-8560-7304D7C2346F.jpegmembers who have been through the MD registration process. Thanks in advance and look forward to meeting some of you in the fall.

Welcome here!
I can't really help with your registration, but mine was painless for the Cobra as it was an out of state title transfer, the car was and is now registered as a 65.
It was a bit more painful for the Daytona, while it was also coming from out of state with a 65 title, my first attempt to get the Historic tag failed as the lady pulled their national database and saw that the car was first registered in 2017.
I tried another day at another MVA branch and it went smoothly.

So if there is no model year on your title, I'm afraid you might be out of luck for the Historic car tag, but somebody here may chime in about the process of getting the car exempt from emission tests. You may even find some older posts explaining the process.

Thanks Franck - appreciate the info. I’m assuming any state easier than CA! Hope that’s realistic. Tim

Beautiful Car! I love the color/interior combo!

Did you meet Rich MacDonald when you were at Hillbank? He has a slab side similar to yours.Rich and his 289 slabside.jpg

Hi Scott

Yes - I tested Rick’s car and bought mine (#034) right after - was Hillbank’s only Mk II roller in stock at the time. Here I am in his car last June topping up before taking it up the canyon. All I needed to push the button!645373DD-0092-4DC0-9416-30E3218DD857.jpeg

Welcome to Annapolis, great cars n coffee their. I live just north of Annapolis. You will be required to get a safety inspection. Maryland gives kit cars a lifetime exemption on emissions testing. After you get your title and tags MD MVA will send you paper work to take for emission testing. when you go to emission testing in Glen Bernie. go to the office, not the garage and they will take you information and send an inspector to inspect your car and after that you will receive the paper work for the life time exemption. You don't need to have historic tags to get exempt from emission testing.

I just saw the new legislation that may change the process. I don't have a clue what will happen.

Many thanks for the input - yes, You Tubed Annapolis C&C and seen some fine machines! Plus, 4 mins from where I will be living.

Arising from yours, is safety inspection done first, then title/tags, then emissions exemption you describe? Opposite to CA where title/tags come last after a long, expensive, multi-agency rigmarole (SB100 sequence).

Regarding MVA's safety inspection, mentioned earlier my CA title doesn't show eg "1963 Shelby Cobra", or replica thereof. It simply notes 'Make" as "SPCNS" with no year of manufacture stipulated other than when first put in service (2019). Does fact MVA calls it a (cringe) "kit car" exempt it from what a modern vehicle might require (eg DOT standards like air bags, 3 point belts, etc?). (If so, guess they can call it anything they like....).

I visit Annapolis every 4-6 weeks - will go to MVA on my next trip & try to educate myself. Don't like the sound of "new legislation"......

You have 30 days after title and tags to get your car inspected. Safety inspect is based on the year the car replicates ie 1965. So no air bags. Their are some MD inspection garages that do kit cars so they are very understanding.

Chris

Know it well. In fact I’ll be taking the MkII down there for car week in Aug before shipping it E.

Below, the actual FvF Miles Superformance GT40 at Hillbank Irvine on one of my trips down there. Local owner. Neither he nor the Hollywood lawyers would let Christian Bale drive the car; instead you see him getting in and out of it a lot! 2FDEB358-AD61-4512-BE6B-ED149A6C299C.jpeg
Look forward to meeting all you guys later in the year. Thanks for the welcome and reg info.

If you are titling as a 63-64 cobra, you can tag it as a “street rod”. No inspection required and no hassles.
Just don’t volunteer information and keep it simple.

Why do I feel you used the same comments when presenting the aircraft forms to the aircrew?;D;D

Hello again all. About to make the move E from CA. Any (COVID era) updates on the MVA process for titling my Superformance MkII apart from appointments/only? I’ll be shipping it here early Nov.

Your thoughts/recommendations gratefully received.

BTW, since last correspondence car has been a glorious PIA. First, SW odo failed. Then T5 synchro failed. Both repaired but labor $ mine. Latest, Holley Sniper EFI went south and I was stranded on PCH. Educated self on CA Lemon Law, and invoked it. Car now being converted to Holley carb - their cost - and I hope that is the last problem for a while.

Despite all I have complete addiction for this car and look forward to many years miles (put 2500 on it since taking delivery Feb 2020.

Hi Tim,

I registered my vehicle recently in Annapolis. New Backdraft with original MCO with "1965 Replica Roadster" printed on it. Turned that in and got it registered as a Street Rod. Received new MD title.
No emissions required.

Chris

Thanks Chris. My invoice does not identify what the car replicates. Rather just: “Superformance Slab Side SP0034 Fiberglass component roller..... “. With a separate invoice for the powertrain purchase/install. Based on your input, I’ll try to persuade the dealer to reissue invoice with similar wording to yours.

You should have received an MCO, or Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin from Superformance that is used to title it. IF you already have a California title, then that is what you take to the Maryland DMV

Thanks Rob.

The CA title only refers to the model/type/year as 2019 “SPNCS”. I’ll take the rolling chassis invoice which does say 65 AC Cobra 289 Replica.

Never got an MCO as you describe - but did receive an owners manual (zip file) specific to my build #.

With all that I’m sure I’ll get it done - question is at what price!!??
