Talk me out of a Coyote engine

Doug,
Actually the Godzilla's supposed to be smaller than the Coyote. And much more reliable. The auto may need a little fittin' but should be quite doable.

If I had some extra space, it might be tempting - although I think I'd probably do another Cobra. A 604 would be almost irresistible ;)

Tom
I didn’t know that. Godzilla seems a little misleading then. But I guess we can give it to them on power.

If someone is concerned sbout a 4in stroke 408 SBF or big bore 427, then what do they think of the 347! And i built a 393 SBF so it could rev fast and still make plenty of hp. Understand that it wasn't a limitation of the block that Ford orginally built the 392 (actually rounds to 393), but to use 302 pistons, stock length 351 rods and an aftermarket 3.85 crank. That's how the geometry of the 9.5in stock block works. Since then 393's use custom pistons and 6.2in long rods, like mine.

Godzilla is narrower than Coyote, not sure about height. Block is iron so about 30lbs heavier. And with Whipple supercharger it makes streetable 700hp and 750Q with stock heads/bottom end. Might fit underhood. Also same firing order as SBF, so should be simliar sound. Coyote has different firing order which may be reason for sound difference. And yes it sounds different.

Gen 3 Coyote still good choice, again 480-500hp on 93 with aftermarket tune, streetable and reliable. I've seen some guys try to modify their engine covers to look better than stock. Crate engine doesn't come with cover. Mines sitting on the shelf, might be for sale, ha, ha!

These are the various dimensions. Some difference on height probably due to valve covers versus intake manifold measurements. Weight difference between Coyote amd other more than i thought.

My 408W with a low rise intake and carb barely fit under the hood of the coupe and I had problems with the fuel overheating in the carb, so I went to the Mass-Flo EFI. Edelbrock makes a similar efi system. There is not much room under the hood, so beware..... Height is a concern and if that Coyote engine is 27 inches compared to the 351W based engines at 25 inches, it may be a big issue.

From talking to people about them, it sounds like the Coyote fits fine. I suspect it is because the measurement above is almost 24" for the 351 before you add your carburetor (or throttle body) and then an air cleaner on top of that for a couple more inches. Whereas the Coyote doesn't have anything else on top. That measurement is also from the bottom of the oil pan, so there could possibly be a difference in the motor mount location on the blocks. It actually sounds like the Coyote is one of the preferred choices for the Gen 3.

I can't imagine why anyone building a contemporary track car would select an iron block pushrod engine that weights almost 100 lbs more than the coyote. The Godziila crate engine is built for trucks with tons of torque off idle, but falls on its face above 4000 rpm.
  • Godzilla: Power: 430HP @ 5,500 rpm, Torque: 475 ft.lb @ 4,000 rpm, Price ~$7500, weight 580 lbs
  • Coyote: Power: 460 HP @ 7,000 rpm, Torque: 420 ft.lb @ 4,600 rpm, Price ~$8600, weight 445 lbs

@JWEHR Talked to Mike Forte today. Seems like a really good guy. Pricing on the Coyote / T56 package from him was pretty good (a bit more than Jegs but cheaper than some others). But I stumbled on a bonus talking to him. He happens to have a single 3.73 Torsen loaded rear end in stock that he was hanging on that he'll sell me. It is hard to find those without making one yourself. And I like supporting the smaller shops anyway. He sounds very familiar with these cars. So unless something comes out of left field, I'll probably order the engine and the IRS setup from him (along with a few other things I need anyway like a hydraulic slave cylinder).

Doug,

You'll have no issues with fitment for the Coyote as it has been done quite a lot. FFR has figured this one out. I bought a rear 8.8 axle with the gears I wanted among other things from Mike Forte. He's an FFR vendor and is good to deal with. As for paint, see if Jeff Kleiner is up to task. He has been painting FFRs in recent years. Although, he is in Indiana.

You really can't go wrong with Mike Forte. He has a reputation for standing by his products and also manufactures some FFR specific parts in-house. Jeff Kleiner, Jeff Miller (da Bat), and Whitby's are the notable FFR body/paint guys. They have wait-lists. If you decide to tackle the body work/paint yourself, they will give you tons of advice.

For paint, you can check with Joe D's guy, "Bowie" in Paeonian Springs. He repaired my Cobra fender that I f'd up and did a perfect blend. He did a great job on Bill Wemhoff's Cobra now owned by John Bissell. Also did a good Job on Dan Deitz's Cobra (But speak to Dan first-as they has an issue with something.) Hector had his repainted there but was not pleased. Also Pete the painter is an idea. He works at Tyson's Maserati. In most cases if you do the prep and panel fitment, you can save a ton of money. Pete repainted my F150 tailgate and my son's truck-both looked perfect.small pix.jpgsmall.jpg

Thanks for all the paint recommendations. It is very early since my car won't be here for a while. But since a lot of these guys have backlogs, I figured it would hurt to start calling around. Regardless, I'm having a lot of fun researching and starting to acquire parts. I pulled the trigger on the engine with Mike Forte today. His price was surprisingly competitive and I got to score the 3.73 rear end that I was hoping to get so I figured I wouldn't wait. I'm excited about all of that. Once it all gets here I'll have a few months to get it all put together before the kit arrives . I doubt I'll try to take on doing paint by myself. I really hate doing the paint prep work. But we'll see.

Now off to look at wheels and tires.;D I think I've got those narrowed down to a couple of favorites. Unfortunately just about anything for this car is going to need a spacer on the back unless I buy something really expensive and have it custom made.

Hmmm...Elder has not yet explained what happened to his tailgate. ??? I thought Dervish had a lock on tailgate damage. Somewhere around 5 or 6 by my count but probably more.
Last week I ordered a Sierra 1500 AT4, Carbon Pro. It features a swiss army knife tailgate which even includes a stereo kicker speaker system. Pretty cool and multi functional if you do not accidently open the tailgate when you have a hitch ball in the receiver which is a pretty common occurrence.

Elder?

For all you vultures waiting for details of my misdeeds, My truck was rear-ended when I was stopped at a light and a moron (with MD tags of course) failed to see I was stopped.

Well now there is a switch. First that I recall of your being hit by someone. I can recall a time when I watched you back into someone.

Soon there will be one less "moron" in Maryland as I began the process of changing my mail address to VA and applying for my VA driver's license as I begin transitioning to VA.

Your Dad recommended a paint shop in the Leesburg area that I forgot the name. They did a terrific job with the "Black jack" screw up on our last wine cruise. Can't tell where the damage was done and I had a special paint that they couldn't apply but successfully matched.
