Track Day-Summit Point-Friday April 16, 2021

Scott - thanks for this. Hope you guys are having a blast today.
I’m not there because the SPS 0034 Mk2 is still with Gear One. (More sagas, another stranding in rural PA, MSD now installed & s/b ready n/w).

Question: bFor Summit Point and other tracks, does drivers rollbar require a brace ie into the passenger footwell? I want to track the car and not miss out on the future fun. But if too involved I may sell this one and replace with a 289 FIA. Thanks

Wow, that sucks big time. Was it the same thing, just stoped running? This time was the rotor broken? I know the Factory Five cars have a brace going into the trunk but none going forward and they run a lot of tracks..

I just went back and saw a picture of your car going loaded for the trip east and I didn't see any roll bar.. Did it ever have one?

Don. Slabside Mk2’s don’t come with rollbar (think you can special order them to be installed at the factory).

This stranding was similar - sudden loss of power. This time however rotor was apparently undamaged.

Command decision to rip out the Holley and replace with MSD though diagnosis not definitive so no idea is thats the fix.

I’ll spare everyone my state of mind but after 6+ strandings including a couple in not so hot places I’m close to dumping it.

I would do the same, but I would not get rid of the car. What's happening is fuel or spark,, You can also have a roll bar installed. To me it sounds like it's had this 1 problem from the get go, can you have the garage add a small light on the power wire to the coil and or MSD box. so if it dies again and the light goes out you know that... To bad you live way over there..

If those guys don't get it figured out, my offer still stands to bring it out and see if we can figure it out. It sounds like an electrical problem. We should be able to chase it down.

Thanks Doug for the offer (you sure you want me rolling it up on a flatbed!?), and Don for the advice.

Al: what exactly is the “common problem” with the MSD 6AL? (Not sure if that’s the model being installed - I’ll check). Might be useful to raise when/if I pick up the car.

MSD boxes get a bad rep, yet they are used in allot of racing applications. Of course NASCAR would run two units. There was a time that the analog 6AL had reliability problems. This seemed to have passed. MSD is now owned by Holley. MSD would tell you that installation problems result from locating underhood near high temp engine components, bad grounds and lack of direct battery power. Newer 6AL are digital vice analog. I'm now running a fully programable 6AL-2 with no issues.

If it rolls up on a flatbed it is even better. Easier to find the problem if it is already dead. If it is running and intermittent it is much tougher.

Most groups require you to have equal protection for you instructor if you do not have previous track experience to go solo. I think SCCA's track night in America program does instruction from the sidelines so you may be able to run beginner groups with them in a 289 FIA (if you are not so tall that the roll bar doesn't adequately leave space above your helmet), but locally they are only at Dominion Raceway. I have no experience on Dominion, but from videos I wouldn't consider it the most beginner friendly track with lots of walls very close to the track.

thanks - good info. for now I’ll be content as a spectator (and over the moon if my Cobra can actually get me to an area track).

Doug/Ken/Al/Don: Still not yet in possession of SPS 34 with MSD. Was hoping for last week...communications spotty ...ho hum. Meantime sailing season has started - my boat is like my Cobra - engine not running most of the time.

I just did a Track Night in America event at Dominion last week. Dfarhood is right about the walls and there isn't much run off area anywhere around the track. I really liked the event and the staff were all super friendly but I'm not sure I would ever go back to that track.

I drove the 95 all day. Jonathan was in the 89.
It was cool but dry. Sun came out as we pulled in from the last session of the day.
